Madagascar

Fourteen days on an island that lives to its own rhythm: from the highlands around the capital, through rainforests full of lemurs, to the baobabs by the Mozambique Channel. The journey ran from 19 September to 2 October 2024.

From the capital we drove east to the forests of Andasibe, then south down the island along the national road: past the workshops and foundries of Antsirabe, the rice terraces and musicians of Ambositra, to Ranomafana National Park, where we looked for lemurs by day and by night. On the coast at Manakara we sailed the colonial canals and saw vanilla plantations.

The second part of the journey took us back to the highlands and on to the west: sisal plantations, silkworms, the savanna and canyons of Isalo in 37 degrees of heat, sapphire mines, and finally baobabs and a fishing village in Ifaty. Along the way we visited a village school and saw how life in Madagascar really is.
